Education Department Gujarat was established along with the formation of Gujarat state on 1st May 1960 named as Education and labour department. In this department social welfare, employment, labour, excise, prohibition came initially. It was establised as separate entity in the August  1976. Now, Education department Gujarat include primary education, literacy, continuous education, secondary education, technical education, pharmacy education, higher education. 

Department has main objective like promote literacy and continuous education. Enrollment of children age between 8 to 14 years in the schools, expansion of secondary and higher secondary education, regulate state education and conduct various examination.
